Q&A: What are the yoga positions best for back pain relief?

back pain

What are the yoga positions best for back pain relief?
I think my insurance won’t cover physical therapy to relieve my back pain and I can’t afford a beginners Yoga class. If anyone out there knows the names of the postures for relieving back pain, I could possibly look them up one at a time. Thank you.

Hi jlb,
I get some back pain myself, and there are a few poses that are great for relieving tension and soreness.

Child’s pose (shown here http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/475) is my go-to feel good pose. While relieving back pain, it’s also very calming.

I also like Cat pose (http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/2468) and Cow pose (http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/2467). Alternating one with the other gets blood flowing to the muscles in your back and provides a gentle massage.

Discussing this directly with a yoga instructor can help pinpoint the perfect poses for your specific back pain. If you’re near one of our lululemon stores, we offer complimentary yoga classes for all levels. Check out store finder to see if there’s a location near you: http://www.lululemon.com/stores/

Hope this helps!

You didn’t state what type of back pain you’re having. I go to a Chiropractor for lower back pain, and it’s affordable for the most part. She also gives me exercises to do between appointments. She recommended Cobra pose for me. You just have to make sure that your hips are firmly flat on the ground during this pose. Then move your arms back towards your hips and look up at the ceiling. Stay in the pose for about 30-45 seconds. Do this pose several times a day.

If your back pain is more in the upper back or shoulder area, Thread the Needle pose is good for that.

You could also start using a stability ball as your chair at the computer. And make sure you drink plenty of water every day. Not drinking enough water is often the cause of back pain.
